Wolf's Call Chap 1 cont...That night, she lay in her bed, staring at the ceiling of her dormitory. She heard her companions' deep breathing, indicating a deep sleep. That was what separated her from them. The fact that they could always sleep easily. She, however, was awoken by the slightest sound or movement and so spent most of her night trying to get back to her shallow state of unconsciousness.
It was late, not quite morning, but close. ZoŽ sat up silently. She slipped out of her bed, gathered up her clothes and started dressing. She would go to the hill. It was nice there, even on cloudy nights. Its magical charge was revitalizing. She dressed in her warmest traveling clothes, taking her thickest cloak from her trunk. One of her roommates stirred. The sleeping girl groaned, rolled over and slept on, unaware of the shadow leaving the room.
ZoŽ stole through the castle's passages with no lamp, feeling her way along the rough stone walls as she flitted past room after room. She took a few well-known shortcuts
Another Life...Don't Call Me Weird, But...
...I remember my last life. I had been very good at shooting. In fact, I was the best. I took no criticism from anyone; I didn't need any. I also vividly remember my death...
I stood in the old abandoned warehouse. I had 'died' the week before and had struck a deal with Hades, god of the Underworld: he would postpone my death if I could somehow change someone's life. I had failed. Now Hades would come.
It wasn't particularly inspiring: waiting in an old, dark, empty, featureless warehouse. It was rather like waiting in a crypt. It let no sunlight in through the grimy high windows, was forbidding and reeked of my soon-to-come death. I flexed my twenty-year-old hands, feeling the comforting weight of my old revolvers on my hips. I could sense that the minion of Hades was near.
The opposite wall exploded in with a flood of choked sunlight. My hands jumped into action and did their magic. They drew the guns and were filled with deadly thunder less than seconds l
The girl feverishly fiddled with the lock. She had to hurry, before someone saw the unconscious guards in the corridor. Oh, curse it! She thought desperately. Picking locks was more Fox's area of expertise. But only she had been able to get past security. Fox didn't have the whole silent approach thing going for him.
She heard a noise in the passageway and tensed. A sigh from one of the downed guards. She relaxed and tweaked the pin in her hand once more. A click echoed through the small space, sounding like a gun cocking. She creaked open the second security door, drawing the keys she'd pick pocketed from an unsuspecting high-security official maybe forty five minutes before. She took a quick census of the room beyond the troublesome door. It was small, naturally, and had only one inanimate object inside, with no living creatures of any kind. Alex stood on the doorframe, her sneakered toes not touching the floor of the room. She put the keys away and li
The Last of the WolvesThe Last Of the Wolves
ZoŽ was an attractive girl. She was tall with a golden complexion, long black hair and a lean fit body. She had a fine, almost elvish visage. Her most striking features were her eyes. Deep sapphire blue, they had a ring of darker blue around the irises and gave her the ability to give out a really penetrating stare. She was also intelligent and a brilliant fighter. The most promising student in the Fourth School, in fact. And her Ability was a rare one, even though it could not cause physical harm or discomfort.
Despite these assets, the fourteen year old trainee had no friends. That was because she shunned companionship. She preferred to be alone and the other teenagers in her year left her alone. They knew exactly what she could do to them if they crossed her path. They'd all felt it during the grueling sword-training lessons. Each one carried at least one scar inflicted by ZoŽ. They gave her a wide berth in the corridors and she had a w
